Best Light Bulbs: Light Bulbs: What to Look For

When choosing between incandescent bulbs and compact fluorescent bulbs for your home lighting needs, there are a few important factors to keep in mind. While it is true that compact fluorescent bulbs are overall more energy-efficient than incandescent bulbs are, they are also more expensive; whether or not their initial cost is balanced out by their overall savings depends upon how long each individual bulb lasts.

The lifetime expectancies printed on bulb packaging are averages only, and even then only apply under ideal conditions. Many consumers have complained that compact fluorescent light bulbs rarely last as long as they’re supposed to. However, since incandescent bulbs are rated for about 1,000 hours and compact fluorescent bulbs are rated for about 10,000 hours, even compact fluorescent bulbs which last only half of their expected life span are more energy-efficient (and thus cost-effective) in the long-term than incandescent bulbs are. Since compact fluorescent light bulbs have come down significantly in price over the past few years, it is likely – though not guaranteed – that using these bulbs will save you money.

To ensure the maximum efficiency of compact fluorescent bulbs (and thus save the most money), it is important to use them in the proper light fixtures, keep them on for at least fifteen minutes at a time, and to exchange any defective bulbs without paying return shipping. It is also worth remembering that these bulbs will be mandatorily phased out in 2012, so take that into consideration when replacing your incandescent lighting.

When shopping for compact fluorescent bulbs, be sure to pay attention to the color temperature. With the exception of halogen bulbs, each type of light bulb is available in various color temperatures, usually measured in degrees Kelvin. Lighting options generally range between a warm 2,700K to a bluish-white 5,000K.

When considering various bulb options, pay attention to lumens, not wattage. Lumen measures overall light output, which is what you really need to consider when purchasing a bulb.

Finally, consider the warranty. Warranties can vary between stores and manufactures, so be sure to read the labels before purchasing.

In general, there are five different types of light bulbs available: Incandescent, Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs), Fluorescent Bulbs, High-Intensity Discharge Lamps, Low-Pressure Sodium Lamps, and Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). Knowing the differences between them can help you decide which bulb best suits your lighting needs.

Incandescent bulbs are the most common for household needs and are, typically, the most inexpensive lighting option. Incandescent bulbs produce a warm and steady light that compliments skin tones, can be used with a dimmer, and come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. However, they are not the most energy-efficient of bulbs, lasting on average between 700 and 1,000 hours.

Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs), on the other hand, are the most energy-efficient bulb available. Capable of lasting up to 10,000 hours, these bulbs use 67% less energy than incandescent bulbs do. CFLs typically come as short glass sticks or small tubular loops. This type of bulb tends to be more expensive than its more ordinary counterpart, though their energy-efficiency may end up saving you money in the long run. Also, it is important to note that CFLs contain small amounts of mercury and cannot be disposed of in the trash can along with your regular waste like other bulbs can.

Fluorescent bulbs generally produce more light per watt and last longer than incandescent bulbs do. These bulbs are your best bet if you have a large space to light. However, their linear design makes them difficult to coordinate with most home décor.

High-Density Discharge Lamps (HIDs) produce even more light per watt than fluorescent bulbs do, though their unique design requires a special sort of fixture. Housed inside a specially designed glass tube, HIDs employ a combination of gas and metals to ignite, striking an electrical arc across tungsten electrodes. Additional equipment, such as ballasts and starts, is necessary to operate this type of bulb.

Low-Pressure Sodium Lamps have the highest efficiency of all commercially available bulbs, though as with HIDs, they require a ballast to ignite. These bulbs operate much in the same way as fluorescent bulbs do, requiring a brief warm-up period to reach their full brightness. Low-Pressure Sodium Lamps are typically used for outdoor, roadway, parking lot, and pathway lighting, where color is unimportant but energy-efficiency is a primary concern.

Finally, Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), lacking a filament, require minimal power to function and have a long life-span. However, they lack the output necessary to compete with incandescent bulbs as primary household lighting.

History of Light bulbs: The History of the Light Bulb – An Electric Dawn

Would it surprise you to know that Thomas Alva Edison did not, in fact, invent the light bulb in 1879? While Edison was certainly responsible for turning the idea of the light bulb into a commercially successful working invention, but the patent he held for the invention itself was not his own original design. Man-made electric lighting actually had its beginnings about seventy years prior, when an English chemist named Humphrey Davy (who was also the man responsible for creating the Davy Lamp, a safety lamp for miners) invented the arc light. This electrical prototype worked through the connection of two wires to a battery, the opposite ends of which were attached to a strip of charcoal. This caused the charcoal, a form of carbon, to become electrically charged and emit a glow surrounded by arcs of electricity.

In 1820, Warren De La Rue enhanced this idea by placing a platinum coil into an empty tube and allowing an electrical current to pass through it: the world’s very first functioning light bulb. While De La Rue’s invention worked and produced ample amounts of light, its costly assembly prevented it from becoming a practical device.

James Prescott Joule’s theory that a resistant conductor would become luminous if an electric current was passed through it sparked the search for a working light bulb filament. Many scientists around the world worked for years on discovering such a filament, but considerations such as safety, cost-effectiveness, and practicality presented numerous obstacles. Finally, in 1860, Joseph Wilson Swan created a carbonized filament in a partial vacuum for an incandescent lamp. Swan’s lamp was capable of remaining lit for thirteen and a half hours, a record Edison would eventually beat with a modified lamp lasting just under fifteen hours. Edison purchased Swan’s patent and continued to improve upon it until he had created a bamboo fiber filament capable of burning for anywhere between 1200-1500 hours.

Students at MIT have recently concocted a genius recycling scheme, ecologically beneficial and capable of helping the environment on a global scale: producing sustainable light bulbs using discarded plastic water bottles. This clever idea, born of a Philippine organization called Isang Litrong Liwanag (“A Liter of Light”), assists in bringing low-cost indoor lighting to regions across the Philippines. And it would certainly be more difficult to find something as wonderfully cost-efficient as these light bulbs are: in addition to the water bottle, the only required components are water and bleach. When assembled correctly, this simple combination is capable of producing lighting equivalent to a 60-watt bulb! The construction of these light bulbs is refreshingly simple: the water and the bleach are poured into a plastic bottle. Sunlight is refracted in all directions by the water, which also disperses the sun’s rays in multiple directions; a single beam, which would traditionally only shine in one small location, can now be used to illuminate an entire area. For its part, the bleach keeps the water clear by preventing the growth of algae and particle build-up inside the bottle. Once assembled, the bottles are put through holes in the roof. Altogether, this process typically takes about an hour to complete. Obviously, these light bulbs are only functional during the day. Still, their installation in Manilla homes has already translated into tremendous cost reductions for families struggling with the high cost of electricity. Over 10,000 of these homemade planet savers have already been installed.

How to Dispose of Light Bulbs: How to recycle/dispose of light bulbs and tubes, fluorescent (CFL)

It is important to realize that not all light bulbs and fluorescent lighting tubes can be disposed or recycled along with your regular trash during curbside collections. It is acceptable to throw away incandescent and non-mercury-containing light bulbs with the rest of your trash, but compact fluorescent light bulbs (also known as CFLs) and tubes contain small traces of mercury and must be taken to the nearest Household Hazardous Waste collection site or community drop-off location. Operating hours for these facilities vary depending upon your location, so it is a good idea to call ahead and confirm before making the trip. There is no charge for disposing your household bulbs and tubes, though please note that community drop-off locations at retail stores will only accept small quantities of light bulbs at a time. (Alternatively, there is no quantity limit for drop-offs made directly at Household Hazardous Waste collection sites.)

If you need to remove CFLs and tubes from your business, take them directly to your nearest Solid Waste Processing Facility and Transfer Station. These locations charge $0.60 per bulb or four foot tube, and $1.20 per eight foot tube. There is no quantity limit for these types of drop-offs.

If one of your fluorescent light bulbs breaks, double-bag the broken bulb or tube in a re-sealable plastic bag and dispose of it in your regular household trash. Do not attempt to dispose of the broken bulb or type with your regular recycling!

Are the cheap light bulbs better?

It really is for the short term, but within the medium and long term, using CFL’s could save you money. About three years ago I transformed half my house’s cheap bulbs to CFL’s. My energy expenses did drop a bit every month due to that – my personal estimate was which it transpired around between $2 as well as $3 monthly. I needed fairly predictable expenses, plus a predictable life regimen, and so i was pretty assured this would be a moderately accurate evaluation. I believe I’d switched more than 8 or ten cheap light bulbs at that time.

CFL’s possess a handful of downsides. The foremost is the price I pointed out earlier – an average CFL 60 watt bulb might run you $1.50-$2.50 in 4 packs ($6-$8 four packs are typical inside my local Target shop), whereas a normal incandescent cheap light bulbs may well only end up being sixty cents (once again, evaluating to 4 or even six pack pricing). Recovering from the first shock from the in advance cost, you need to be worried about disposal. CFL’s contain mercury, and want to become discarded inside a certain manner. Numerous local municipalities plus some big box merchants have CFL recycling applications, however it is another thing you have to consider when you are switching to CFL’s. A single last drawback many people recognise, may be the light color differs from what we are accustomed to with traditional cheap light bulbs.

Early CFL technologies might have been referred to as a little ‘colder’ then conventional cheap light bulbs, however newer CFL technology is a lot harder to tell apart in the old-fashioned bulbs. I can not tell a positive change anymore, except during my utility bill. About the up side, simply because CFL’s be more energy efficient (typically only 20-30% around regular light bulbs), additionally they emit less warmth. What this means is less cooling in the summertime time (even though it does mean a little more work with your heat during the cold months). Let’s perform a quick recap from the benefits and drawbacks:

Pros: CFL’s have long life, use much less energy and also emit much less heat

Cons: Higher preliminary cost, include hazardous mercury needing professional recycling where possible, light colour isn’t as normal with a people.

If you’ve not joined the CFL revolution, provide a go. Try switching just a few your regular inexpensive light bulbs in the following week and find out if you do not notice a positive change. The only real difference you need to notice is within your power company bill.

The European union directive on prohibited cheap light bulbs continues to be controversial for several reasons. First, because lots of people dislike the price and excellence of the low-energy replacement bulbs and 2nd since there are claims that they’ll harm our overall health. Campaigners claim they’re damaging at greatest (causing migraines as well as skin rashes) and may even be harmful, bringing on epileptic suits (in people with epilepsy) and aggravating problems for example lupus and autism. It really is claimed how the health with a minimum of 3 million individuals in the united kingdom might be affected within an adverse way when pressured to make use of only these energy-efficient kind of bulbs.
